Backyard Birthday

There is something magical to me about a backyard birthday party....it seems like the very essence of childhood.  And, when a unicorn shows up, well, it's beyond magical,  the day becomes simply enchanted....

I don't usually take my camera to birthday parties where Gracie or Abigail have been invited.  It seems a little, ummm, for lack of a better word, obtrusive.  My camera's not exactly a tiny little thing and I tend to forget myself when I'm behind the lens and do things like get too close to the birthday cake or contort myself into strange positions trying to get the perfect shot. To put it succinctly, as soon as my camera is in my hands, I start to act like a photographer instead of a mommy at a birthday party with her kids.  So, my camera stays in the car (rarely, rarely do I ever leave the house without it, so it just stays in its case in the car).  But, when the unicorn came through the back gate at the party and the kids were all told to line up for a ride, well, you can imagine what happened.  I dropped my drink and sprinted out to the car for my camera.  I just had to get a picture of Gracie riding the unicorn.  I told myself that I would just take pictures of Gracie and wouldn't be an annoying photographer at all.  Then, another magical thing happened.  The birthday girl's mommy (who also happens to be one of Gracie's beloved teachers) asked me if I would take some pictures of the birthday girl riding the unicorn.  I barely contained my smiles of joy!    Here are just a couple
